Abstract

Cell/protein interactions play a critical role in biology, medicine and biotechnology. Relevant applications include catheters, stents, grafts, or brain implants as well as polymer dishes for use cell culture systems. These applications are unified over the needs for precise presentation of one or multiple signaling molecules on the substrate surfaces. Progress in these and other fields has fueled a wide range of research activities focused on the controlled presentation of biomolecules on synthetic substrates.

In this presentation, I will review recent progress related to the use of Chemical Vapor Polymerization to deposit functionalized (reactive) coatings on a wide range of biomedical relevant substrates. Examples include a wide range of functional chemical groups including acetylenes, active esters or photoreactive moieties. Beyond the mere deposition of these coatings for functionalization purposes, it is further possible to spatio-selectively modify surfaces. Recently established methods for 2D modification include dip-pen nanolithography and projection lithography.
