Antibacterial blue light to combat resistant germs
Innovative strategy against antibiotic-resistant bacteria in wastewater hotspots
Abstract
The unbridled misuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine contributes significantly to the global spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and the emergence of new resistant bacteria, which ultimately also enter the environment via wastewater. Innovative strategies are being sought to address the sources of the development and spread of hygienically relevant bacteria in a decentralized or centralized manner and thus counteract the spread of facultative pathogenic bacteria and their clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes. Antibacterial blue light (aBL) in combination with a porphyrin-based photo-enhancer is being investigated as an innovative step towards reducing the emission of ARB via wastewater systems.
